Fusion inhibitor PRO 140 reduces HIV burden in mouse model
Last Updated: 2001-04-09 18:22:46 EDT (Reuters Health)
WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) - The investigational HIV fusion inhibitor PRO 140, which blocks the CCR5 coreceptor, reduced viral burden to undetectable levels in a SCID mouse model of HIV infection, Progenics Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced on Monday.
In the mice, initially high HIV concentrations became undetectable 9 days following a single dose of PRO 140, investigators reported at the 14th International Conference on Antiviral Research in Seattle, Washington.
Specifically, after treatment with PRO 140, "viral concentrations rapidly decreased more than 20-fold to undetectable levels (<400 copies/mL)," according to a press release from the Tarrytown, New York-based company.
"Today's findings represent an important first demonstration of the in vivo potency of PRO 140," commented Dr. William C. Olson, vice president of research and development at Progenics. Additional studies will examine the magnitude and duration of this response using multiple doses of PRO 140, both alone and in combination with other drugs.
These data "highlight the promise of CCR5-targeting therapies in general, and PRO 140 in particular" added co-investigator Dr. Dennis R. Burton of the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California.
