Ethiopia allows import of AIDS drugs for first time
Last Updated: 2001-04-16 17:01:49 EDT (Reuters Health)
ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia has authorized the importation of AIDS-related drugs for the first time since the disease was discovered in the country in 1986, the Ministry of Health said on Monday.
The ministry called on firms to import affordable medicines to help the 2.6 million people living with HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia, one of the world's poorest countries. A detailed list of the designated antiretroviral drugs has been drawn up to guide importers, the ministry said in a statement.
Ethiopia has relied on public awareness campaigns to fight the disease, which affected few people in the 1980s, but killed an estimated 300,000 people in 1999.
Ethiopia ranks third in Africa in terms of the absolute number of people infected with HIV/AIDS. South Africa has an estimated 4.7 million people infected with HIV, while Nigeria has the continent's second highest number of cases.
