Pegasys is a new treatment option for hepatitis C patients not previously treated with alfa interferon therapy. It received FDA approval on October 16th, 2002.

FDA approval of Pegasys (peginterferon alfa-2a, Roche pharmaceuticals) on October 16th offers a new treatment option for hepatitis C patients not previously treated with alfa interferon therapy. Pegasys Solution for Injection is the second peginterferon approved for use in the United States, but the only peginterferon indicated for use in cirrhotic patients. Its primary indication is monotherapy for the treatment of hepatitis C infection in patients with compensated liver disease. In adult patients 18 years of age and older, Pegasys is to be self-administered subcutaneously, once weekly for a treatment duration of up to 48 weeks.

Pegasys is available as a single dose vial of 180mcg/ml solution.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
Pegasys is administered subcutaneously, once weekly for up to 48 weeks. The dose of Pegasys is 180mcg or 1mL per week.

A dosage reduction or therapy discontinuation of Pegasys may be required in patients experiencing a serious adverse reaction during the course of treatment (example: neutropenia or thrombocytopenia). The most common adverse events associated with Pegasys were "flu-like" symptoms, which may decrease in severity as treatment continues. The other side effects include injection site reactions and psychiatric adverse events, of which 18% of the patients reported depression.
